MA.GI

MA.GI is the sensorial world of designer Maggie Fan, where textile innovation and
hand-crafted artistry converge to tell deeply personal stories. Rooted in exploration and
emotion, the brand reimagines materials and form through unconventional textures,
atmospheric silhouettes, and tactile depth. Each collection invites a full-body
experience—one where audiences are not just observers, but participants immersed in
narrative, sensation, and transformation.

Where do you draw inspiration for your collections?

Life, NATURE, my different levels of mentality, things that trigger my senses, all types and mediums of art, the process of doing fun drapings…etc

Is there a garment or collection you feel especially connected to? Why?

At this moment, the “Rebirth” look from my latest collection, Nouveau Vitalité, holds a
particularly special place in my heart. The gown was meticulously crafted using the
wet-felting technique, a process that took nearly a month just to create the base textile. From there, I added intricate needle-felted details and hand-beaded embellishments, building layers of texture and meaning.

What makes this piece especially powerful is how it invites the wearer to physically engage with it—it moves and unfurls like a blooming lotus flower. The symbolism of rebirth was central to its creation. Inspired by the lotus that submerges each night into the mud and rises again unstained, blooming anew each morning, the gown embodies resilience and strength.

I pushed myself with this piece—not only in terms of silhouette but in the very making of the textile. Wet-felting such a large piece by hand felt like molding the fabric from the ground up, which forged a deep, almost meditative connection between the garment and myself. It’s more than just a gown—it’s a symbolism of intention and hand craft.

What are the core values of your brand (e.g. sustainability, craftsmanship, inclusivity)?

I believe the core values of my brand are authenticity and craftsmanship. When I design, I stay deeply connected to my personal experiences and thoughts. I don’t draw inspiration from things that don’t resonate with me, because without that connection, I can’t tell a meaningful story—or create a collection that feels genuine.
Craftsmanship, too, holds immense importance in my work. In a fast-paced,
technology-driven world where I often find myself overwhelmed, it’s the act of making by hand that grounds me. It slows me down, centers me, and brings intention back into the process. I truly believe that hand-crafted work infuses garments with a certain warmth—what I like to call a different kind of temperature—and a richer depth of storytelling.

What does “emerging” in today’s fashion world mean to you?

To me, it really comes down to one word: growth. In today’s world, almost everything already exists—the silhouettes we play with, the styles we aim to innovate—they’ve all been done in some way before. In the current fashion landscape, it’s rare to create something entirely new that’s never been seen.
But that’s where the fun part lies. Emerging designers have the chance to take these familiar elements and reinterpret them through their own lens, bringing fresh perspectives and ideas to the table. I think young creatives (myself included—lol) thrive on that challenge. We tend to push ourselves beyond our comfort zones, and it’s often in those moments of experimentation where the real sparks happen.

What role do you think fashion plays today in storytelling or activism?

I think, especially with the rise of social media, fashion has taken on a much bigger role in storytelling and activism. We’re constantly absorbing information online and through all types of social platforms—many of which are heavily shaped by and centered around women—have become powerful spaces where fashion is deeply embedded.
Whether it’s in sports, entertainment, film, or even just on the streets we walk every day, fashion is everywhere. It’s become nearly impossible not to notice its presence and influence. And because of that, fashion has evolved into a powerful tool for
communication—one that can amplify voices, challenge norms, and share meaningful
messages with the world.
