The Genealogy of the Bed in Contemporary Art: From Intimacy to Public Provocation

The bed has been an ever-present, but also ever-evolving, symbol in art: a tender space of intimacy but also a fraught site of revolt. From the early Renaissance depictions of Andrea Mantegna to the post-Impressionist art of Edouard Manet to the postmodern revolt of Tracey Emin, we trace a history of the bed in art, considering it as an archaeology of the soul, a (literal) hotbed of identity building.

Viennese Actionism was one of the most shocking art movements of the 20th century, emerging in post-war Austria to turn the body into a site of provocation, violence and ritual.
