Tito’s Blue Train sits permanently parked beside a stretch of derelict track on the edge of Belgrade. Once the symbolic vessel of presidents, film stars and the carefully staged image of a country that believed it was going somewhere, the carriages now carry a heavy stillness, polished in places and rotting in others, going nowhere.

This is the feeling of an entire generation. Not a dramatic state of collapse, but rather the certain knowledge that forward motion will never come. Education finished, ambitions named, and then the long wait that fails to resolve in departure towards opportunity.

The country performs the gestures of progress while the same mechanisms keep the

tracks blocked. Corruption is rampant and advancement is inherited or absent. An entire generation learned the copied movements of every previous era from state authority, counterculture, turbo-folk, traditional orthodox values, western and eastern influence, and found none of them led to a way out.

The lights are low, the bottles are empty. The night has nowhere left to go for those left behind at a party for ghosts.

For those who have inherited a ticket, what happens inside the train is not a protest and not an escape. It is the recognition of young people who know they were never given a destination, or a choice, gathered in the only place that admits it.

It’s a record of the fact that they are already here, already waiting, already dressed for a journey that was cancelled before they arrived.
