Inspired by the Buddhist tale of demon-turned protectress Kishibojin, this sequence explores themes of loss, rebirth, redemption and spiritual transformation, whilst canvassing the archetypal journey from maiden, to mother, to crone. Kishibojin was shot as a conceptual sister to multidisciplinary artist, RIEKO’s four-track EP, Zakuro, lamenting innocence lost, whilst taking solace in the possibility for new life and hope on the horizon. The sequence also features latex artefacts designed by artist, HYDRA; the material’s restrictive, asphyxiating, but potentially soft and flowing properties mimicking the emotions that develop through the sequence. Zakuro will be released on 12th November with a launch party and photography exhibition at East London’s queer members club, Stück.
